CALAFIA: The California Poetry
Claimed to be “the most comprehensive multicultural anthology of a State’s poetry ever compiled,” with over 200 poets and over 14,000 lines of poetry, Califia was assembled by Project Director Ishmael Reed with Contributing Editors: Simon Ortiz, Bob Callahan, Al Young, Victor Hernandez Cruz, Shawn Wong, Arl Young, Carla Blank, and Marie Anderson.
Honored for its complex mix of poetry from the early 1800’s to contemporary poetry written close to its publication in 1979, Reed says it demonstrates that “Despite a history which reads like a shooting script for a ‘Dirty Harry’ movie, or gunfight at Kentucky Fried Chicken—a history of floods, fires and earthquakes—California has produced a colorful gumbo culture.”
